This paper examines the influence of “the Doctrine of the Mean” on Henry David Thoreau’s Walden. Thoreau, from his college years at Harvard, was keenly interested in Oriental classical works including religious and philosophical texts and frequently borrowed such books as Hindu and Chinese scriptures from Ralph Waldo Emerson. Thoreau contributed two articles of selections of sayings and of Confucius and the Chinese Four Books to the Dial in 1843, from which he had developed his interest in Chinese philosophy. Furthermore, he included about ten direct quotations from the Four Books and frequently refers to Chinese philosophers such as Confucius and Mencius throughout the entire text of Walden. What is most important in this paper is to argue that Thoreau applied what he had learned from the core ideas of The Doctrine of the Mean to solve mental and physical problems of daily lives, which he thinks is superfluity. In order to support this argument, this paper traces Thoreau’s readings of the Chinese Four Books especially focusing on The Doctrine of the Mean and re-reads Walden in the viewpoint of the ideas of “the Doctrine of the Mean.” This paper also elucidates the similarity between Thoreau’s experimental life at Walden Pond and the core ideas of “the Doctrine of the Mean” by highlighting Thoreau’s emphasis of the simplification of the ways of life in Walden.
