This research aimed at analyzing the colors of traditional masks in Korean folk play and closely analyzing the characteristics of colors of Korean traditional masks along with the traits of the characters from the comprehensive viewpoint. Research result is as follows. Acromatic color in Korean traditional colors is the color of the public, color of suppression, as well as color of the weak. Accordingly, the symbol of helpless and weak people was expressed in black, while the representative people of false ruling circles who are living by the institutions were expressed in white mask, while those the hero of the public, such as Malttugi or Chwibari, etc. were expressed in red color. The reality of the public of late Joseon was in the deficiency state that could not be satisfied with basic desire as weary and inequal status, persecution of women under the patriarchal system, poverty, and disease, etc. Such characters as Malttugi and Chwibari, etc., who grandly stood against those who cannot be opposed in reality satirizing such reality, were expressed in red color. Here, major characters who had resistant characteristics in the play who were under the suppressive reality lead the story wearing red color mask. Red symbolizes a wish for the ideal world. Therefore, it was determined, same as the Korean traditional color, civilian color consciousness yearned for primary color as red and the color with high chroma, symbolizing positive meaning.
