Applying an extended model with social capital based on the Theory of Planned Behavior(TPB) to three city-county level regions participating in the Rural Village Development Plan, this study aims to examine the relationship between social capital and resident participation intention.
To verify the influence of social capital on resident participation, this study constructs a structural equation model with three exogenous variables such as structural, cognitive and relational social capital, three parametric endogenous variables such as attitude toward participation, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control, and an endogenous variable such as participation intention.
The study finds that, first, positive relationship is identified between cognitive social capital and two endogenous variables such as attitude and subjective norm. Second, attitude and subjective norm are positively related with participation intention.
The study demonstrates that social capital is vital in resident participation and, especially, improving normative cognitive social capital rather than institutional structural social capital is an important task to raise resident participation.
