This research is designed to analyze the difference in physical self concept and stress between participants and non-participants of swimming exercise to present the former group with the results with regard to effects of participation and provide the latter group with basic information on spontaneous motivation toward swimming exercise. For this research, participants in swimming exercise were composed of 163 members of a swimming program at a sports center in K city, Kyunggi-Do and 30 contestants in Masters Swimming Competition of K City of the same province, while non-participants consisted of 130 residents of K City, of the same province. An. the result is as follows. First, participants of swimming exercise than non-participants showed higher levels (p < .05) of physical self-concept and lowest levels of stress derived from depression and anxiety. Second, in terms of frequency of participation in swimming exercise, ``1 to 2 times a week``, ``3 to 4 times a week``, ``5 to 6 times a week``, and ``everyday`` than ``never`` showed higher levels of physical selfconcept. 6 months or shorter participation than non-participation showed higher levels of physical activity and sports competence, and endurance, while longer participation showed higher levels (p < .05) of physical activity, sports competence, flexibility, and the body``s overall factor. ``3 to 4 times a week`` than ``never`` showed lower levels (p < .01) of depression, while ``shorter than 6 months`` and ``over 2 years`` than non-participants showed lower levels (p < .01) of depression. Third, sub-variables of physical self concept such as physical activity, sports competence, muscular force, flexibility, endurance, self-respect, health, and the body`s overall factor have been shown to be negatively correlated with sub-variables of stress such as sleep disorder, depression, and anxiety. Therefore, participants and non-participants of swimming exercise show difference in physical self concept and stress.
