Many existing studies have reported a beneficial effect of marriage on mental health, but few studies examined the differential effect of marriage on depression by socioeconomic status. The “Resource Substitution” concept suggests that more effective resources may exist for the health of certain disadvantaged social group. This study intends to confirm the significance of marriage as a more effective resource for the mental health of the lower-educated group. The longitudinal data (2007, 2010, and 2014) from the Korean Welfare Panel Study and two-group latent growth model (male and female) are used in this study, and the subjects of study are the 12,788 respondents who are over 25 years old. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, persons whose relationships with spouses were not fully satisfactory had a better trajectory of depression, compared to persons with no spouse. This disparity in depression was mostly explained by family income. Second, the beneficial effects of marriage resources on depression were greater among the lower-educated groups than among the college-level group. Third, the particular importance of marriage resources for depression of the less-educated was related to having spouses rather than the quality of relationships with spouses. Using an appropriate longitudinal analysis method, this study provides a practical implication for personal and social intervention with confirming the significance of marriage as a resource for mental health of the lower-educated.
