The purpose of this study is to investigate the Deuteronomist’s view of Jerusalem choice passages as reflected by his whole history. The Deuteronomistic History commonly used to designate the book of Deuteronomy as well as the section of hebrew bible known as the Former Prophets. The salient historical events that lead to Israel entrance into the land of Canaan and her subsequent exiles to Babylon are interpreted in the strata of the Hebrew Bible known as the Deuteronomistic History. It took considerable times until this historical book completed its current form and, in the while, the Deuetronomistic History had many stages of traditions about election of Jerusalem.
The early tradition of the Deuteronomistic History(pre-Dtr) that strong, polemical expressions about Yahweh’s election of Jerusalem were frequently employed. The early tradition of the Deuteronomistic History(pre-Dtr) clearly emphasized that Yahweh, the God of Israel, he chose dynasty and Jerusalem unconditionally.
The first stage of the Deuteronomistic redaction tradition(Dtr1) is a theological reaction by reporting Josiah’s reform in a eulogistic manner. The reign of Josiah in the Deuteronomic History was the final flourishing period of the kingdom of Judah. At that time expectations ran high that a great empire like that of David would be reestablished in Israel So, this stage(Dtr1) expressed Jerusalem will be the eternal city of Yahweh has chosen for his name.
The second stage of the Deuteronomistic redaction tradition(Dtr2) is rooted in the context of the exile and the situation of the Judean community in Babylon. The historians(Dtr2) are deeply influenced the royal and Jerusalemic expectations which prevailed during the time of the exile. And the royal and Jerusalemic expectations were closely connected with the hope that the coming king would lead the people out of the bondage to the land of Judah to renew Jerusalem. So, they(Dtr2) conditionally modified a Davidic covenant and emphasized that the people keep the commandments of God for the restoration of Jerusalem.
Through the above investigation, this study concludes that Jerusalem choice passages in the Deuteronomistic History had the capability of hope to the people.
