Generally, we consider that identity is defined by personal and social role. However, in case of dealing with it as academic topics, we can discuss in various ways. Recently, Great Root Wood suggests the word of trans-identity and he analyses characters’ identities within trans-identity storytelling and divided into four types such as turing identity, changing identity, crossing identity, and transcending identity. Moreover, he also tries to extend it to diverse discourses related to narrative, artistic, aesthetic, cultural, social, legal, ethical, political, and economical categories. For this, this study makes use of Peter J. Burke"s multi-identities, which is defined by external focus and internal focus. The former is composed of social identity, role identity, and personal identity and the latter consists of perceptual control system and individual identity. For an application of this study, I analysed 〈Holy Motors〉(2011) directed by Leos Carax. Firstly, two characters who are Oscar and Celine are in accordance with changing identity using the concept of trans-identity. Secondly, this study goes into details about their identities with the theory of multi-identities. The significance of this article can be mentioned that it tries to expand trans-identity to discourses. Also, I hope that we can have a chance to think about each identity in modern society through this study.

일반적으로 개인의 정체성은 주로 사회적 신분 혹은 역할에 의해 규정된다. 그러나 학문적으로 접근할 경우, 그 논의는 매우 다양하다. 본 연구는 정체성에 관한 논의 중, 최근 국내 학계에서 임대근이 제기한 ‘트랜스아이덴티티’ 개념을 재고하였다. 캐릭터의 정체성 변화에 주목하는 트랜스아이덴티티는 정체성 역전, 정체성 전치, 정체성 횡단, 정체성 초월로 나뉜다. 트랜스아이덴티티 개념에 대한 재고와 확장을 위하여 본고는 피터 버크의 ‘다중정체성’ 개념을 도입하였으며, 이는 크게 두 관점에 의해 규정된다. 먼저 외적 관점인 ‘사회적 구조’에 따라 ‘사회적 정체성’, ‘역할 정체성’, ‘개인 정체성’으로 세분화된다. 내적 관점으로 보면, ‘성품’과 ‘환경’이라는 ‘제어 시스템 1’, ‘제어 시스템 2’로 구성되는 자아의 통합적 ‘제어 시스템 3’이 개별 정체성을 형성한다. 다중정체성을 통한 트랜스아이덴티티의 확장은 캐릭터의 정체성 전환을 보다 면밀히 분석하는 데 기여한다. 이에 관한 사례 연구로, 레오스 카락스 감독의 영화 <홀리 모터스>의 두 캐릭터-하루에 아홉 명의 삶을 살아가는 오스카와 그의 비서이자 고용주인 셀린-를 선정하였다. 분석 내용은 먼저 트랜스아이덴티티 개념을 활용하여 두 캐릭터의 정체성이 정체성 전치에 해당하는 근거를 제시한다. 이어 다중정체성 이론을 활용하여, 사회적 기준에 의한 외적 정체성과 캐릭터의 자아 심리를 동원한 내적 정체성을 살펴본다. 이와 같이 학제 간 사유를 통해 정체성 담론을 고찰하고, 트랜스아이덴티티의 확장 가능성을 시도한 데 본 연구의 의의가 있다.
