This study presents an investigation into ‘Co-construction’ in Korean and Japanese conversations with a focus on the utterance situations of the former speaker.
The study examined if there would be differences in ‘Co-construction’ according to what kind of information the speaker’s utterance had and whether the listener knew it or not.
The analysis results found a very similar pattern of ‘Co-construction’ between Korean and Japanese.
In many cases, the speaker’s utterance contained neutral information or information about the speaker him/herself, and in those cases, ‘Co-construction’ was frequently found.
In both Korean and Japanese, ‘Co-construction’ made the most appearances when the listener knew the content of the speaker’s utterance, and the number of its appearances was not small even when the listener had no such knowledge.
‘Co-construction’ was created even when the listener had no such knowledge at the time of the speaker’s utterance as he or she guessed with hints from the context of the story or made the utterance of his or her own choice regardless of the speaker’s intention.
Those findings confirm that ‘Co-construction’ occurs in various utterance situations in Korean and Japanese conversations and indicates that ‘Co-construction’ is an active speech act of the listener to get involved in the speaker’s utterance in the realm of human speech behavior.
