Growing interest in protecting our forests has motivated efforts to replace wood pulps with non-wood pulps such as bagasse pulp. Handsheets were produced using various ratios of softwood bleached kraft pulp (Sw-BKP), hardwood bleached kraft pulp (Hw-BKP) and bagasse soda pulp. Refining method was chosen from mixed refining and separated refining. Surface properties of these handsheets were characterized by their respective air permeability, surface smoothness and formation. Fractal dimension (FD) analysis was also conducted to characterize the surface roughness profiles of the handsheets. The results showed that the air permeability of the handsheets decreased as the bagasse pulp content increased in the Sw-BKP, Hw-BKP and bagasse soda pulp mixture. Surface roughness of the handsheets increased as the bagasse soda pulp content increased at mixed refining, but the trend is not apparent at separated refining. On the other hand, formation deteriorated as the bagasse pulp content increased at mixed refining and separated refining. The surface roughness profiles of the handsheets showed two regions: macro-scale and micro-scale. Fractal dimension analysis was performed across the two regions. For the macro-scale roughness region, FD values range from 1.42 to 1.56 whereas for the micro-scale roughness region, FD values range from 1.89 to 1.99. A higher FD value indicates a higher degree of surface roughness. FD value tended to increase with increasing content of bagasse soda pulp in the pulp mixture. Fractal dimension analysis showed promising results that it could potentially be used to characterize newly developed pulp, as well as paper produced from it.
