In the Pāli texts of Theravāda tradition, the term ‘avyākata’ has two different meanings: undecided and unanswered. The common analysis of the first meaning, ‘undecided,’ is based on the Abhidhamma texts, the Vissudhimagga and the Abhidhammattha Sangaha. According to these texts, all phenomena have three characteristics: unwholesome (akusala), wholesome (kusala) and undecided (avyākata). In this way, the first meaning of avyākata is one of the three attributes to measure the attributes of all phenomena. The second meaning of avyākata is found in the Sutta texts of Nikāya. In relation to this meaning, ‘unanswered,’ there are narratives, and in which there are two characters, Poṭṭhapāda and Vacchagotta, who asked ten metaphysical questions to the Buddha. At that time, the Buddha did not respond to either questioner. But in this case, his silence was also a kind of answer. The Buddha intended for the questioners to awake from their own ignorance, and in order to attain his intention he used silence as his method of teaching.
