The purpose of this paper is to explore the characteristics of ritual ceremony in mountains and streams during Goryeo Dynasty by examining the archeological finds and archives. The most noted site for ritual ceremony in mountains and streams are Wolchulsan(mountain) Ritual Site and Jungmak-dong Ritual Site in Buan County. Wolchulsan Ritual Site was situated on the mountaintop where shrine was built nearby. Wolchulsan Ritual Site, inherited from Shilla, remained as a national ritual site in Goryeo Dynasty. Jungmak-dong Ritual Site was Mapo(port) shrine in Boan-hyeon under the jurisdiction of Jeonju-mok. At this site, also inherited from Shilla, the magistrate of Jeonju-mok served as the chief presider of the ritual ceremony.
Most of the artifacts from Goryeo Dynasty collected at Wolchulsan Ritual Site and Jungmak-dong Ritual Site are utensils for rituals made of celadon. Both high-quality pure celadon utensils for ritual and low-quality green celadon utensils made in early Goryeo era, presumably between 11th and 12th century, were discovered at Wolchulsan Ritual Site. That is because classy pure celadons were used for the national ritual ceremonies at Wolchulsan whereas low-quality celadons were for the private rituals among commoners at the same place. The host of the ritual ceremonies used different types of utensils. Therefore, artifacts of different qualities were found in the same ritual site.
Blood sacrifice such as killing a pig was presented as offerings in national ritual ceremonies. At ritual ceremonies presided by the commander of local area, meats or vegetable were served by the host’s choice. Model horse was discovered at the ritual sites in Wolchulsan and Jungmak-dong. Horse-shape utensils were offered as sacrifice for ritual ceremonies. Offering horses to god during the ritual ceremony in mountains and streams can be construed in two ways. Due to their speedy mobility, horses considered a medium that can transfer the host’s wish to the heavenly gods. Another reason for offering was to for victory in case a war breaks out and mobilizing military is required.
