Travel industry is in policy spotlight as one of among seven rising service industries by Korean Government. We estimate technical efficiencies based on accounting data of 180 Korean firms of travel industry using Battese & Coelli (1995) SFA model. The average efficiency of whole travel industry is around 0.52. The SFA analysis also estimates coefficients which explain the efficiency. The age of firms is one of the factor; the firms which come in the market later are more efficient. In order to raise efficiency of travel industry, continuous innovation of exist firms would be helpful. Dummy variables of subgroup under the travel industry showed statistically significant coefficients of explaining the efficiency; that is, industrial environment of each subgroup is important factor as well as firm level behavior. Diversity in the industry would not be an ignorable factor because travelers need various combinations of services. However, efficiency improvement by specialization would be another important aim. In sum, more efficient sub-industry should be facilitated preferentially in case government encounter resource limitation and the authority should give incentive to more efficient firms within a sub-industry for better competitiveness.
