The writer Lee Beom-seon defected in year 1946, right after north korean land reform. he start his career since 1955. Academic studies usually his short novel, about lyricism and prosecution of society. Actually he also announce 15 full-length novels. Nonetheless until now research about his works lean on short and medium. Meanwhile short and medium works of his comes to moderation and lyrical nature, his full-lengths exposes tragedy of war and issues about the division. Therefore there should be expand about discuss his full-length novel.
Especially “Memoirs of White Crow(1979)” is last his full-length and strongly appeal autobiographic. This work imagery 30 years of defected period as refugee. Protagonists leave his hometown Pyeongannam-do right after North Korean land reform like writer himself, left a note that names Memoirs of White Crow, and disappear. What interesting point is, it introspects refugees life by quotes the form of memoirs. Outwardly his life as refugee looks like perfectly adapted, but actually in pain as he describe himself as “white crow” - the irregular thing.
In this work, what hidden in chronological order of internal text is strong desire of self justification. Especially over 30 years, anger that growths by betrayed from his family, friends and system makes accelerate. Even criticism of nation and politic occupy the first place. His will of self justification and testimony combined self awareness in form of memoirs, remembrance and prospect at the same time. For this reason, the writer uses his writing for uplifting the life.

이범선은 1946년 북한 토지개혁 직후 월남하여 1955년 『현대문학』을 통해 등단하였다. 주지하다시피 기존 연구에서는 이범선의 단편소설에 주목하여 리리시즘 및 사회 고발의 성격 등을 주로 논해 왔다. 그러나 사실 이범선은 15편에 달하는 장편소설을 발표한 바 있다. 그럼에도 지금까지의 이범선 문학연구에서 이들 장편소설에 관한 논의는 거의 이루어지지 않은 상황이다. 절제된 묘사와 서정적 성격이 강조된 중단편과는 달리, 그의 장편에서는 전쟁의 비극과 분단문제가 다양한 방법으로 구체화되고 있다. 이에 따라 이범선의 장편소설에 대한 논의의 확대가 필요하다.
특히 1978년부터 18개월에 걸쳐 『현대문학』에 연재하여 연재가 끝나던 1979년에 바로 단행본으로 출간된 『흰 까마귀의 手記』(1979)는 이범선이 그의 생애 마지막으로 완성한 장편소설로, 자전적 성격을 강하게 띠고 있다. 이 작품에서 월남작가 이범선은 월남 이후 30년에 이르는 시기의 내면의 변화를 세밀히 형상화해내고 있다. 북한의 토지개혁 직후 평안남도의 고향을 떠나 월남해 온 남자가 ‘흰 까마귀의 手記’라는 노트를 남기고 사라지는데, 이러한 수기 형식을 빌려 월남민 스스로가 남한에서의 30년 삶을 성찰하고 있는 과정을 보여준다. 완벽히 적응한 것으로 보였던 그의 삶은, 사실 스스로를 보통의 존재가 아닌 ‘흰 까마귀’로 인식하며 살아온 고통의 내면으로 가득 차 있었음이 드러난다.
이범선의 자전적 소설인 『흰 까마귀의 手記』를 통해 파편화된 삶을 스스로의 힘으로 재해석하고 있는 글쓰기의 기능을 이해할 수 있게 된다. 이를 바탕으로 월남작가 이범선의 작품 세계를 새롭게 판단해 볼 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있다. 이 작품에서 내부 텍스트의 연대기적 질서 속에 감춰져 있는 것은 더없이 강력한 자기 정당화에의 욕망이다. 그리고 국가 및 정치 현실에 대한 비판이 여기에 수반된다. 회고와 전망이 동시에 드러나는 수기의 형식 속에서 자기인식의 과정은 결국 자기 정당화의 욕구 및 증언 욕구와 합치되며 열린 텍스트로 나아간다. 이는 작가가 삶을 비극적인 차원으로 고양시키는 과정에 글쓰기를 이용하고 있음을 알 수 있게 한다.
