Thanks to the development of commerce in the 1920s and 1930s, the show windows of the department stores and shops in Gyeongseong changed the landscape and stimulated consumer sentiment and appeared as new attractions. The contents of the show window were rapidly increased in the newspapers and magazines of the time, which demonstrated the fact that show window became to have an important meaning economically, socially and culturally.
Show window is regarded as ‘show window of desire’ that forms attraction on goods. There, goods obtain imaginative value. Show windows lead trend, promote purchase impulsiveness and gives joy of visual consumption. It forms urban spectacles and invokes panoramic experiences to pedestrians. Pedestrians receive recognition in front of show window that they are being that realized desire. Then, they become subjects of consumption. As such, show window is a space that shows product aesthetics of the capital era in an intense way contributing to the lead of modern commodity culture and visual culture.
Meanwhile, show window is a place where endless desires and deficiencies circulate and coexist, and where social differences are revealed. In Gyeongseong in the 1920s and 1930s, show window was a sensitive place to reveal colonial differences, i.e., differences between Japanese and Korean, urban people and rural people, men and women, the rich and the poor and consumers and laborers in terms of region and class. Show window related materials in the newspaper and magazine of the time included records and sarcasm contents. In particular, with continual argument of functional and aesthetic vitalization of show window of shops run by Joseon people, it showed intention to promote commerce and industry of Joseon against the inflow of colonial capitals.
In the rapid progress of capitalism, the show window in the colonial Joseon demonstrated charming attraction and grew continually at the streets of Gyeongseong. Show window of Gyeongseong was a mirror of the city reflecting the numerous dualities of commerce and art, reality and fantasy, desire and deficiency, subject and other in the era of modernization.
