This thesis examines three levels of East Asian discussion reenacted in [Sonnim(A Guest)], [Simcheong], and [Baridegi] of Hwang Sok-yong. East Asian discussion from the late 1990s to the early 2000s does not remain in domestic discussion formed, delivered, and spent in the knowledge world of Korean society, and functions as local discussion and its reality is verified.
In this process, there is a literary response of such circumstance of reappearance of East Asian discussion represented by ‘East Asian civilizational theory’, ‘East Asian identity theory’, and ‘East Asian community theory’ in novels of the writer Hwang Sok-yong. First of all, [Sonnim(A Guest)] is sought as an alternative of a critical situation to solve a problem of colonialism of the past with so-called anti-imperialistic argument or nationalistic discussion. In addition, going through trade channel in the 19<SUP>th</SUP> century, [Simcheong] forms the homogeneity of the modern East Asia. A process that Simcheong losing her family receives various cultures in several countries and then develops her own innovative and human inclination shows a process that various countries in the East Asia had changed in the age of capitalism in the 19th century. Last, handling a problem of a nation under a divided system, [Baridegi] portrays reality mixing the magical world and everyday world ‘realistically’.
