The two great transitional figures who opened the way for modern English poetry-G. M. Hopkins and W, B. Yeats-are different in a various way, but we can find some similarities in their revolt against dualism. Their revolt against dualism can be better understood in three illuminating contexts.
First of all, we can find some compatibility in Eastern revolt against dualism, especially that of Zen Buddhism, which is more highly developed and more extensive than Western version. It is also useful to relate their dualistic conflicts to the ancient Western philosophy of Heraclitus described in Hopkins’s and Yeats’s poems. Lastly we need to consider the influence of Pre-Raphaelite natural supernaturalism on both Hopkins and Yeats, a more recent attempt to reject the dualistic habits traditional in Western thought and to unite real with ideal, the world of becoming with the world of Being.
Thus despite their differences, both Hopkins and Yeats, throughout their poetic careers, tried to revolt against dualism. Dualistic thought strictly divides the opposites which indeed are dependent on each other, necessary to each other for the achievement of wholeness. Through their revolt against dualism and the quest toward the vision of wholeness, Yeats and Hopkins tried to liberate man from his spiritual dungeon of Manichean dualism.
