Violence against women is widespread in Bangladesh and occurs in different forms with domestic violence as one of the most prevalent forms of violence. Despite having apex laws and policies and constitutional guarantees for equal rights for women, there is considerable divergence between the provisions as laws exist in theory and in practice. Prior to the enactment of Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act in 2010 existing legal framework failed to provide any effective remedy for the victims of domestic violence. In light of the major shortcomings of the existing legal framework, civil society and women’s rights organizations engaged in advocacy efforts demanding for a law to combat domestic violence. My organization, Bangladesh National Woman Lawyers Association (BNWLA), was one of the leading organizations in the advocacy efforts, having firsthand experiences providing legal aid to women subjected to violence. Throughout the processes, I have been actively involved, and in this paper, I attempt to articulate my experiences of a successful advocacy effort.
