Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture established in 1952, is the largest Korean ethnic enclaves in China and it is the home to the ethnic Koreans’ culture, art, language, and education.
China is a multiracial country consisting of 56 ethnic, and 36 of them are crossborder ethnicities who are residing on the boundary between the countries. Due to these characteristics, China has selfgovernment policy in areas where ethnic minorities live intensively. Besides, China has carried out intangible cultural heritage protection policy for ethnic minorities as growing interest in cultural heritage recently. In 2011, China legislated and promulgated the ‘People’s Republic of China Intangible Cultural Heritage Act’, and the government has prepared to register UNESCO World Heritage list. According to these policies, Yanbian Korean Chinese communities develop and hold various festivals to preserve Korean folk culture.
The festivals of Yanbian Korean Chinese can be classified into three types.
Firstly, there are four season tourism brand festivals all year long such as ‘the spring of Yanbian’, ‘the summer of Yanbian’, ‘the autumn of Yanbian’, and ‘the winter of Yanbian.’ In specifically, azalea festival and applepear(ping guo li) blossom festival are held in spring, Tumen river culture tourism festival is held in summer, Korean Chinese folk tourism festival is held in autumn, and Tumen river snow and ice festival is held in winter.
Secondly, festivals are held with the theme of Korean traditional culture and customs that are passed down for centuries from Yanbian areas (6 cities, 2 towns). Regional representative festivals are folklore tourism day in Antu, tungso culture and arts day in Hunchun, Dano (the festival on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar) in Yanji, and farmers’ day in Longjing. These festivals contribute to promoting the Korean culture heritage and providing residents with the chance to experience the traditional activities. Especially, Sangmo dance of Wangqing was performed in Gimhae (South Korea) in 2013.
Thirdly, festivals are connected regional characteristics and its specialties such as Bingcheon Harbin beer festival in Yanji, sand sculpture festival and apple picking festival in Hunchun, and pine mushroom festival in Longjing. These types of festivals contribute to the growth of the regional economy and improving regional image abroad.
In summary, Yanbian Korean Chinese community utilizes festivals not only to discover and promote Korean traditional culture but also to develop regional tourism industry and reinforce international cooperation.
