7 million overseas Koreans, had been formed through the colonial diaspora and divided Korean in the Cold War era. Colonial Diaspora became the displaced persons of divided era, and overseas Koreans of the Cold War era experienced the Cold War conflict. In such situation, Overseas Koreans were made new history. After Korean War many Koreans immigrated to USA as international married women, war orphan adoptees at first, and after longing for ‘American Dream’. Vietnam war forced to young man as soldiers, technician and workers. After Vietnam war some Koreans shifted to other southeast Asia, for example Thailand, Indonesia and Australia, etc. Also Under Park Chung-Hee government had drive agriculture immigration to South America and miners and nurse to Germany. After establishment of diplomatic relations with China and CIS in 1990’s, Korean diaspora living in China and CIS came back to south Korea and included overseas Koreans. Such this, 7 million overseas Koreans have various historicity, but they are companion and a valuable asset to the Global Korean network.
From this historical background, the first role of overseas Koreans is to contribute to the reunification to overcome division of Korean peninsular and the Cold War. Since 1989 the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Cold War did over in the West. But the Korean peninsula remains the only world"s last Cold War division place. So playing role for Korean unification is to contribute to the unification of Korean history, and to act to end the world Cold War history as well. In this point, North and South Korea should regard overseas Koreans as ‘one Korean overseas’, as asset for reunification and prosperity of desirable global Korean community. Overseas Koreans can dwarf North and South, so there are buffers for the unification.
The second role is to keep the Han identity in the era of de-territorialization nationstate and multi-cultural coexistence. At then, Han identity is necessary to be associated with the universal values of the world in order to be connected to Han pride. There are many issues in the Korea modern-contemporary history for learning universal values of the world such as peace, historical reconciliation and human rights. History education for overseas Koreans is important in this regard.
When the Overseas Koreans to defend peace and human rights through the historical consciousness, they will also increase pride as Koreans and civic of resident country.
