In his book Truth and Justification(19991) Habermas discards his long-held consensus theory of truth well known with its label “ideal speech situation” and dares to adopt a non-epistemic concept of truth in order to do justice to the unconditionality of truth claims, and in this way also to the realistic intuition of actors in their practices of the Lebenswelt. This change of view is related to a theoretical-philosophical orientation which he calls “Kantian pragmatism”. First, this paper traces why and how he abandons the consensus theory and moves on to the formulation of a non-epistemic concept of truth. It is showed thereby that this change follows the Kantian pattern of thought (Denkfigur), and that the problem situation facing his new concept of truth is also very Kantian. Then the strategical significance of the non-epistemic concept of truth in his theory construction is illuminated in light of his emancipatory interest that penetrates his entire academic life. His non-epistemic concept of truth turns out to have practical-philosophically convincing power while it seems to have some vulnerabilities theoretical-philosophically. Here, too, it is the Kantian pattern of thought which leads his theory construction.
