The purpose of this thesis is to examine the meaning of truth and freedom in the Gospel of John, and to consider the case of Yonsei University that established the truth and freedom of John as a university ideology. The truth and freedom of the Gospel of John are characterized by the character and liberation of truth revealed in the unity with Jesus Christ. The truth of John’s Gospel is not something to be searched as an object, but it means unity with Jesus Christ and through it with God. It has a personality characteristic in that it is embodied in life, personality through knowledge, enlightenment, and faith. Also, this truth frees us from the suffering of lies, murder, hatred, and persecution. The desperate longing for freedom through the unity of Jesus Christ and God paradoxically shows the degree of anxiety and oppression, and it also implies resistance and rejection to such anxiety and oppression. Therefore, the emancipatory nature of truth is also an expression of oppression and rejection of violence. In the era of the so-called 4th Industrial Revolution, where fundamental reflection on humans and the world is urgently required, the truth of John’s Gospel and the character and liberation of the truth implied by the spirit of freedom suggest the direction for which Christian universities should go.

이 논문의 목적은 요한복음에 나타난 ‘진리’와 ‘자유’의 의미를 살펴보고, 요한복음의 진리와 자유 정신(요한 8:31-32)을 대학 이념으로 제정한 연세대학교의 사례를 고찰해 보려는 것이다. 이를 통해 계몽주의적 진리 이해에 토대하고 있는 현대 대학의 진리관을 비판적으로 성찰한다. 요한복음의 진리와 자유는 예수 그리스도와의 일치 안에 드러난 진리의 인격성과 해방성을 특징으로 한다. 진리의 인격성은, 진리 탐구의 주체와 대상을 분리시키지 않는다. 요한복음의 진리는 대상적으로 탐구되는 ‘무엇’(whatness)이 아니라 진리이신 예수 그리스도(하나님)와의 연합을 의미한다. 이 연합은 상호사랑을 통해서, 믿음(앎)을 통해서 전 존재 가운데 구현된다는 점에서 인격적 특성을 지닌다. 진리의 해방성은 진리 탐구의 전제로서의 자유가 아닌, 진리 추구의 결과로서 이루어지는 자유를 가리킨다. 요한의 진리 추구는 세상의 거짓과 미움과 박해의 고통으로부터 자유를 준다. 예수 그리스도·하나님과의 일치를 통해 자유를 얻고자 한 요한공동체의 신앙적 갈망은, 불안과 억압의 소산인 동시에 그러한 불안과 억압에 대한 저항과 거부를 뜻하기도 한다. 따라서 진리의 해방적 성격은 세상의 거짓과 억압에 대한 거부의 표현이기도 하다. 이처럼 요한복음은 로마제국의 폭력과 유대교로부터의 배제와 거부의 경험 속에서 진리와 자유라는 대안적 신앙을 제시하고 있다. 인간과 세계에 대한 근원적 성찰이 절실히 요구되는 소위 제4차 산업혁명의 시대에, 요한복음의 진리와 자유 정신이 내포한 진리의 인격성과 해방성은 기독교 대학이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시해 준다.
