This study aims to understand adolescents’ online participation based on comparative analysis between adolescents and adults. Therefore, we investigated how participation in online content creation-recreational, altruistic, and political-varies depending on social traits, online networks, and internet literacy. Major findings are as follows: First, it was found that adolescents with higher social trust participate more in recreational and altruistic content creation. Second, the results indicate that online networks play a major role as social capital which leads to greater online participation. Among online networks, bonding networks were found to predict participation in each of the three dimensions of online participation, and bridging networks were found to predict participation in altruistic and political dimensions. Especially, adolescents’ bridging networks’ effect on participation varies from that of adults’, suggesting greater importance of bridging networking for adolescents. Furthermore, each aspect of internet literacy-skill, information, and creation-was found to contribute to participation differently, which may help to understand how young people actively engage online based on certain competences. Particularly, adolescents’ participation in political content creation is relatively independent compared to other dimensions, unlike the findings for adults. This study enhances our understanding of influences on adolescents’ online participation and highlights its distinct nature.
