A Study on the Impact of Social Capital on Citizen Participation

Report Errors

The purpose of this study is to identify the degree of social participation and political participation of Korean citizens, and to identify determinants of social capital on citizen participation.
According to the results of the analysis, social participation rate (47.3%), which means participation of public interest and nonprofit civil society organizations through community activities, was relatively high. On the other hand, the percentage of political participation, which means political activities such as petitions, signatures, and rallies or demonstrations for public interest and nonprofit purposes, was relatively low (26.0%).
The results of analyzing the effecting factors on citizen participation are summarized as follows. First, the independent variables that were significant for social participation were "Neighborhood bond", "Social (regional) bond", "Institution norm", "Age(under 20)", "Age(30 39). And The statistically significant variables on political participation were "social (regional) bond" and "student" variables.
Remarkable points of this study were identified that interest in and sharing in the community as a network could significantly affect not only social participation in performing the functions of the community, but also political participation in redesigning the basic framework and paradigm of the country.
