After ‘Candlelight Revolution’, the reform politics of Korean society depends in the long run on the vigilance, contestation, and participation of the awakened citizens. Citizen and its ‘democratic citizenship’ is most important here, hence the need for the ‘education for democratic citizenship’, especially for the next generation, is enormous. But there are many barriers. Above all, the ‘Confucian Modernity’ of Korean society and its hegemonic meritocracy ideology hinder systematically the formation process in which people grow into active civic subject. Meritocracy ideology produce ‘contempt society’ which lead citizens into the loss of their ordinary self-respect. In this context, Korean Education for Democratic Citizenship as a ‘formative project’(Michael Sandel) must reflect this situation very critically and put its special focus on the improvement of the ‘civic self-respect’, beyond simply introducing the foreign model such as German ‘Politische Bildung’. For that purpose Korean Euducation for Demoractic Citizenship must overcome a sort of the intellectualism which focuses on the ‘conscientization’, and makes great effort to enlarge the experience space for the democratic relationships of mutual recognition.
