Since the essential characteristics distinguishing isolated spaces from others, it is quite important to cross over the boundaries. Considering this basic understanding, Siberia has been seen and interpreted as exotic space in which time had been stop, does not work, or in general a sort of boundary between world and anti-world and cultured ordered world and chaos itself, and so on. For this reason, Siberia as a special space in particular creates a plot throughout the 19th century Russian literature with travel and other related spiritual journeys.
Siberia is closely related to the works of F. Dostoevsky. The eight-year-experience in the novelist, Dostoevsky himself, in Siberia are shown in his The House of the Dead (1862). For Dostoevsky, the novel is a vivid picture of what he himself saw and understood in the labor camp in Siberia. First and foremost of all, for Dostoevsky closed space is identical to death itself; the prison in Siberia is nothing but the house of the dead. Interestingly enough, the writer’s most fundamental achievements in the observation of the people are provided in this novel. Likewise, this novel is both life rehabilitation and resurrection; thus, this space is not a prison, but a potential space which brings a creative artistic space for the novelist. Moreover, this camp in Siberia has been considered an embryonic stage for the holiness. Having perceived this, Dostoevsky was grateful for his suffering and personal experiences which he underwent in there, and thereby providing a path toward a literature classics in Russia and over the globe, as well.
