This paper attempts to critically examine Nicolas Bourriaud’s concept of altermodernism. Bourriaud proposes altermodernism as a conceptual framework to support the form of presentation of artworks that he refers to as “relational art” or “radicant art.” The works that he praises as examples of altermodernism might belong to a style of contemporary art. However, they accentuate creolization or hybridization – pre-existing features of postmodernism – to an extreme degree through travel, migration and exchange. Such works are merely renditions of postmodernism that emphasize and develop postmodernism’s concept of contingency and incidentality. Of course, we can accept these works as one of the various expressions and manifestations of contemporary art. However, they cannot be positively viewed as a “new modernism” that overcomes the shortcomings of postmodernism, and restores the critical resistance of modernism. Therefore, Bourriaud’s altermodernism should be regarded as an extended form of postmodernism.
