In this study, field measurements were carried out in 17 bathrooms of 10 housings with different floor plans to investigate the level of the plumbing noise transmitted from the bathroom to the neighboring space according to the door opening conditions. The noise reduction at the neighboring space relative to the noise level in the bathroom was analyzed by focusing on the drainage noise of the water closet showing higher noise level than other sanitary wares. The result showed that the noise level in the bathroom with the open door decreased by about 2.1 dB(A) compared to the closed door due to the increased sound absorption. Compared to the noise level in the UBR bathroom, the noise reduction in front of the door was analyzed to be 6.1 dB(A) and 1.1 dB(A) in the closing and opening conditions, respectively. On the other hand, the noise reduction for the bathroom applying wet construction method was 11.4 dB(A) and 6.1 dB(A) in the door closing and opening conditions, respectively. Due to the above result, the noise level in the adjacent room is similar between both construction methods, although UBR system showed lower noise level in the bathroom than wet construction method. This is due to the contribution of the flanking transmission noise on determining the overall noise level, which is also confirmed by the measurement for airborne sound insulation using a speaker. The result indicates that the flanking transmission noise needs to be controlled to reduce the overall level of the plumbing noise in the neighboring space.
