This study aims to analyze how two types of speech acts would be realized in conflicted and in reconciled discourse contexts by tracing back an interlocutor’s relationship-transition from the conflicted relationship to the reconciled one. The focus of linguistic analysis is laid on comparing acknowledgement (acceptance or apology) with rebuttal (justification or denial) in two discourse settings, i.e., family and acquaintance one, from the perspective of Austin (1961), Culpeper (1996), and Brown & Levinson (1987). In addition, this study conducts action analysis in order to essentially comprehend how and why an interlocutor would choose acknowledgement or rebuttal according to his/ her relationships with the other party. At the end, Kincaid’s (1979) communication model provides us with a comprehensive understanding of some results found by the blending approach (Han 2014) in this study.
