The purpose of the study is to analyse how to use “I think” as an epistemic stance marker used in Korean learners’ writing. Epistemic stance markers are often used to describe speakers’ degree of subjectivity. Unlike other markers, they consist of a personal pronoun “I” and a verb “think”, so they can be used to deliver speakers’ subjective feeling, opinion, evaluation instead of meaning of cognition (thinking). From a perspective of syntactic structure, the role of epistemic stance markers changes through two processes: grammaticalization and pragmaticalization. To this end, the study uses three corpora: Korean learner corpus, LOCNESS (native learner corpus), BNC sampler to investigate these two processes in terms of sentence positions, formal structures, and functional profiles. A distinctive result from the study shows that Korean learners are likely to use “I think” for emphasising a subject of sentence who expresses a personal opinion rather than a certain degree of subjectivity.
