This essay analyzes the ‘noocytes’ in Greg Bear"s Blood Music from the perspective of Gilbert Simondon"s ‘transindividual human-machine ensemble,’ and proposes to name it posthuman.
Modern technological optimism, technological pessimism, and subsequent human alienation result from the continuation of human-machine relationships previously established, and anxiety from new relationships that have not yet been established. As technology advances beyond the individual level of the thermodynamic era, approaching the transindividual level of the information networks, relationship between human and machine must also change. 21st century inventions such as digital network, genetic engineering, and information science links human to the micro world, and human transindividually group the pre-individual potential in that space, expanding the horizon of life beyond the limits of a molecule, deterritorializing the old form of life to create a new one. This new form of life is called noocytes, in which the interest of an individual is an exact match with that of the group, as ‘individually, but together,’ like an orchestra"s ensemble.
This work, through the ‘transindividual human-machine ensemble,’ shows how humanity can phase-transition from human who utilizes tools and dominates over nature, to posthuman who freely adjusts the relationship with the world to relish unbounded freedom.
