The work of empirical legal researchers has provided governments, law reform bodies, judiciaries, economic and social institutions with important insight on how the law is developed and put in exercise through societal processes. The law plays a crucial role in shaping the ways in which individuals interact in a society. Although the law has been considered a social science, opponents of the view contend that law is not a social science but an art. This paper highlights the relationship between law and social science. It shows that there are various authors who maintain that law is a social science, and those who maintain that law should not be considered as a social science but an art. By assessing the argument put forward by the two groups of authors, this paper concludes that law has some elements of both social science as well as art. The objective of this paper is thus to demonstrate that although law is generally considered a social science, it include elements of an art and should be considered as both a social science and an art.
