In this thesis, we will look at the characteristics of Yu Hang-Lim’s works during colonial period, a representative novelist from La dislocation, in the relationship between the empire and colonies.
His literature has been discussed mainly from the standpoint of modernism, but it can also be viewed from the standpoint of antidevelopmental or anti-bildungsroman since it consistently deals with the colonized young people whose growth has been blocked.
The anti-bildungsroman novels are works that appear in an inverted form of bildungsroman novels, a representative genre of realism. It is difficult to find the characters who are fully mature in the Yu Hang-Lim’s novel. Rather, most characters are likely to stay in a state of delayed growth or face premature death before maturity. They do not grow properly as members of society, such as failing to have a decent job or failing marriage.
There are a lot of works that seem to be stagnant or flow slowly. The characters in the novel can neither be fully reconciled with the colonial community nor can they grow sufficiently. This characteristic is closely related to the state of delayed modernization in Pyongyang, where the modernization has progressed to some extent, but the traditional image still remains.
The most striking feature of Yu Hang-Lim’s literacy world is that most of his works are centered around Pyongyang. Compared to Kyungsung, Pyongyang was a place where the subordinate character of the colonies became more visible. The uneven development of the economic structure of the empire-colony leads to a concentration of capital into imperialist countries and prevents the normal development of the colonies. This particular geopolitical situation in Pyongyang seems to have influenced the characteristics of Yu Hang-Lim’s novel.
