Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) have diverse background and career. He was a theologian, a university founder, a church reformer, a prime minister, a political party leader, a journalist, and the prolific writer. So it is rather difficult to understand his abundant life and ideas. In this paper, I try to analyze and introduce his Lectures on Calvinism (1898), which contains Kuyper’s core ideas. Through this work, we can discern main thoughts that Kuyper advocates.
From second secction to seven section, I analyze his six lectures on Calvinism accordingly. The six themes are as following : (1) Calvinism in History (Calvinism as Lifesytem), (2) Calvinism and Religion, (3) Calvinism and Politics, (4) Calvinism and science, (5) Calvinism and Art, (6) Calvinism and Future. Through this analysis of his lectures, we can grasp not only some main thoughts of Kuyper as common grace, sphere sovereignty, and the pluriformity of church, but also how Calvinism can be applied to all areas of life.
Through analyzing his lectures, we can clearly see that he understands Calvinism as a life-system or a Christian worldview rather than denominational name or some core doctrines. I think that Kuyper’s main thoughts have not only been influential over the 20th century in English speaking world, but also they have relevance with Korea yet. So the writer earnestly hopes that his lectures will be used as a starting point in order to kindle further discussions on Calvinistic thoughts. Many will implement these thoughts into practices.
