In this study, the overlay welding behaviors were evaluated by electro-slag strip cladding process using AISI 430 stainless steel strip according to welding process parameters such as welding current, welding voltage, welding speed and polarity. The changes of the deposited metal and flux were evaluated by measuring bead width, penetration depth, deposition rate and flux consumption. The increase in welding current increased the bead width, penetration depth, flux consumption and weld metal content, but the flux / weld metal ratio decreased. Bead width, amount of weld metal decreased with increasing welding voltage. On the other hand, the penetration depth showed maximum at around 30V, and flux consumption and flux/weld metal ratio were increased. Bead width, flux consumption, amount of weld metal, flux/weld metal ratio decreased with increasing travel speed. However, the penetration depth was the maximum at 25.4cm/min. The changes of the weld metal and flux measured in this study can be generalized by using the heat input. This process was characterized in that the dilution decreased with increasing heat input. However, the amount of deposited metal and depth of heat affected zone increased with increasing heat input. It is presumed that the decrease in the dilution with increasing heat input is due to an increase in flux consumption and an increase in flux conductivity.
