Oian Oian-yi(錢謙益) is the representative poet in the early Qing, who lived over the period of the end of Ming and the early of Qing. He is from Jiangsu(江蘇) Changshu(常熟) and was a leader of Donglindang(東林黨), a political organization in the end of Ming. He was called as Jiangzuosandajia(江左三大家) together with Wu Wei-ye(吳偉業) and Gong Ding-zi(龔鼎孶). At that time, Oian Oian-yi criticized the Qianhouqizi(前後七子) for their claims that they only urged to imitate the Tang poetry in a climate where classicism has prevailed and also attacked Jinglingpai(竟陵派) who opposed the classicism of the later Ming.
His poetics is highly regarded as it presents the starting point of the early-Qing poetry while at the same time compiling all the controversial poetics of the later Ming. His poetry shows various styles due to his polymath and the history of life that lived in the historical upheavals. His poetry was remarkably superior in Gutishi(古體詩) and Jintishi(近體詩) in terms of form, especially the Qiyanlüshi(七言律詩) is highly regarded. In this article, I examined his poetry and major works of poetry together to see how his poetic claims were embodied in his work. First I review his poetics in there aspects ; 1. Poetry must tell the truth, 2. Poetry must have content and 3. To learn and to read widely and then I divide his works into four categories (1) sadness for the times (2) expressing sentiments in prison (3) sadness for being ruined country (4) couple’s affection.
