In this paper, we will show how {XP, YP} problem at a root clause of scrambling structures in Japanese and the sentential subject constructions in English can be explained under the theory of Labeling Algorithm in Chomsky (2013, 2015). As for {XP, YP} problem at a root clause of scrambling structures, we will assume that the scrambled phrase bears [Focus] features and is moved to [Spec, C] of the matrix clause and the {XP, YP} problem of scrambling constructions can be solved by the way of labeling through focus feature sharing between the scrambled phrases and the matrix C. As for {XP, YP} problem at a root clause of sentential subject constructions in English, we will suggest that since sentential subject constructions involve a DP-shelled structure with a φ-feature, following Dubinsky and Davies (2006), the syntactic object at a root clause of sentential subject constructions can be labeled as {φ, φ}. In addition, we will also show that our approach can be extended to PP subject constructions in English.
