This article examines how the ideological basis of the Tonghak peasant army is changing through the circular letter and a manifesto of the Tonghak peasant army.
In the period of the movement of posthumous exoneration for the founder, the main goal of the Tonghak Peasant War changed from religious demands to the opposition the Japanese and the Western. And from the time of the Gobu uprising the goal tunred to anti-corruption of the ruling class. Opposition to the corruption of the ruling class continues until the first uprising. In the second insurrection, opposition to Japan and the West comes to the fore again. In terms of identity, the contents related to Tonghak showed a tendency to be weakened gradually, but the factors related to Tonghak were strengthened once again during the second Peasant War.
But the demands of the peasant forces did not require a revolutionary thought of a great change in worldview. The peasantry had never challenged the Confucian social order and made the assumption that the supreme kingship was self-evident. However, the demands and intentions of the peasant forces were not necessarily ‘Gaebyeog’(開闢) enough to require a big change of worldview. The peasantry had never challenged the Confucian social order and made the assumption that the supreme kingship was self-evident.
