Yellow Sea surrounding China"s mainland and the Korean peninsula played a role of an open mecca for exchange, political, economical and cultural in ancient East Asia, as the sea was a mixture of unique natural and humanities conditions.
The Korean-Chinese marine transportation routes in 8-12th century is divided by Northern & Southern period and first half of Koryo Dynasty. The Cross middle of Yellow Sea route is used in Northern & Southern period. The north course goes by way of Kyungju, Dangunpo(唐恩浦), the central part of Yellow Sea, Dengzou(登州) and Changan(長安), the south course Kyunggu, Heojin(會津), the south part of Yellow Sea and Changan(長安)
In Koryo Dynasty especially 10th century, the southern sea route on the Yellow Sea from a southwest of the Korean peninsula to the Chinese Yangtze river is opened. It is based on analysis of the basic navigation of the ancient time, the appearance of the magnetic compass for navigation and the navigational circumstance of the Yellow Sea"s coast.
The aspect of Korean-Chinese marine exchange in 8-12th century is divided into five period. First period is from establishment of Balhae to before of ‘rebellion of An-Sa(安史의 亂)’. The network of Northern and Southern State Period is formed by this period. Second period is from ‘rebellion of An-Sa(安史의 亂) to before of Cheong Hae Gin(淸海鎭)"s establishment. This period is a higher position of Balhae"s trade. Third period is from time of Chang Bo Go(張保皐)’s dead to establishment of Koryo(高麗). This period is a higher position of Silla"s trade. Finally after Koryo established, hegemony of trade was turned to China traders.
