Today, we live in a democratic society where talented, persuasive ability is directly connected with success and in an era of one-man media, where it is possible to freely express one’s ideas. This article introduces the rhetorical index, which quantifies and evaluates the capacity of speaking and persuasion.
Based on this, we analyzed 寒门贵子 Han men guizi (Dragon from the stream), the speech of Liu Yuanwen 刘媛媛, winner of 〈Super Speaker 超级演说家2〉, focusing on the comparison with that of the second prize winner.
In this paper, we analyzed the rhetoric index based on Aristotle’s three persuasive elements. As a result, the speech 寒门贵子 Han men guizi scored 9 points out of 10 in the score whereas 人生需要急转弯 Rensheng xuyao ji zhuanwan (Life needs a quick transition period) scored 6.5 points. In conclusion, the speech entitled 寒门贵子 Han men guizi was not enough to logically argue the validity of the argument in the aspect of Logos, but it was able to get a high score of 9 points because it made good use of the remaining Ethos and Pathos, which is not so different from the actual evaluation result of the program.
The content of the speaking lesson 好好说话 Haohao shuohua (Saying well), which was established in China by the famous MC Ma Dong 马东 in the online platform, is said to have earned about 40 million yuan (about 6.8 billion won) last year. In this increasingly demanding state of the art for so-called rhetoric, we are now paying attention not only to celebrities like national leaders and successful businessmen, but also to public speaking and therefore in-depth research should be conducted on speaking strategies that the general public can apply in everyday life. In addition, the attempt to rhetorically quantify and evaluate the speech will also be meaningful.
