This paper intends to examine significance of a Literary history of the coterie called Banshi (Anti-poem) by tracing their creative soul and interpreting their poems in 1970’s.
The literary coterie magazine movement of 1970’s was one of the literary method of reaction that responds to several negative factors of the existing mainstream in literary circles. In case of Banshi, the members emphasized that the poetic language of poems written by the main poets was so abstruse that the gap between poets and readers became wider. In other words, first the members pointed out that esoteric poems written in the main poetical circles or by the previous generation failed to arouse emotional empathy of readers and could not make them understand. Then, by using easy poetic language the members equally tried to convey the truth of a life and reality. They named this thought about poets “great simplicity” themselves. In short, it is a core element for readers to feel and understand the reality of the times. This “great simplicity” has been embodied variously in poems of main members such as Kim Chang wan, Kim Myung In and Jeong Ho seung.
In this way, the members of Banshi continually paid attention to the readers above all things and did not overlook attempts to reduce the distance between poems and readers in writing. On the sidelines of writing, they continued their effort to overcome ideality and esotericism in poetic language by hosting round-table talks, literature lectures and public readings.
