Violence against women is prevalent in every society. It includes any act or threat by men or male dominated institutions which impose physical, sexual, or psychological harm on a woman or girl because of their gender. In most cultures, traditional beliefs, norms and social institutions legitimize and perpetuate violence against girls and women. Nepal is, historically and predominantly, a patriarchal society which has culturally prescribed codes and behavioural norms for girls and women. So, many forms of gender-based violence exist in the society in Nepal, such as domestic violence; sexual abuse, including rape and sexual abuse of children by family members; forced pregnancy; sexual slavery; traditional harmful practices to women like child marriages, menstruation restriction (Chhaupadi), dowry-related violence; violence in armed conflict, such as murder and rape; and emotional abuse, such as coercion and abusive language etc. Chhaupadi is one form of violence practiced in mid-western and far-western parts of Nepal as a cultural practice. In this custom, girls and women are considered untouchable and are forced to stay in a cow-shed/Chhaushed during menstruation and child delivery. This custom has negative consequences on girls and women on their education, health, psychology and life. Not only this, the custom has claimed many deaths of the girls and women. This is violence against girls and women in Nepal. So, in this paper, I have included some reviews on the root causes of the Chhaupadi practices, major concerns of it relating to women empowerment and also I am presenting lessons learned, challenges and the way forward coming from my work as a Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Coordinator in Mission East Nepal.24 Marginalized.
