Based on the comparison between 《High and Low》and its original, this paper considered the comparison of story, direction, formation of character, and plot. The shooting of Gondo`s living room in the first half is the straight angle-shooting with frequent long take, which reminds of theater stage. In case of the direction of the latter half where the space has been expanded to the whole area of Yokohama, the process of getting close to the real criminal through inference and logic was edited as a speedy little scene while the present of investigation report was crossed with the past investigation scene.
Next, it is the comparison with the original. contrary to cold-blooded Douglas in the original, the main character Gondo is strong and formed as a humane and moral character paying a ransom at the end. Also, Takeuchi positioned in the antipode is a character newly created by Kurosawa. In the aspect that the motive for crime is not simply `getting rich`, but the relative deprivation from the gap between the rich and the poor, it is differentiated from the crime of the original. Also, in case of the plot, the first half was adapted by following the original focusing on Gondo`s dilemma while the latter half revealed the solution process of the crime in detail.
One thing gets clearer through the comparison with the original would be the expansion of the intention to produce the film to `social issue` by the criminal Takeuchi`s criminal motive, contrary to the original focusing on the `moral dilemma`.
