With the increase of life expectancy in German society, there has been a higher interest on elderly people. This study started with this premise and focused on the following issues. First of all, the study demonstrates that elderly people in German society are frequently a subject of interest by the media. Secondly, there is a discussion of different interviews of elderly people’s personal viewpoint and their perspective of the future. Thirdly, based on these two early discussions, the research question of this paper will focus on how important and meaningful it is for the elderly to build a society environment where they are acknowledged as the representatives of German society.
An increased interest on the elderly self-management has helped people realize that they should respect their elders because they are their community’s spokespersons. In other words, the significant challenging idea of wanting to build a communal society in Germany, where elderly people should be included, leads to this conclusion. If the age of the elderly compromises their deliberate control of their actions, their self-management should be respected and if needed, a living environment without a guardian’s care may be required. This could be accomplished through a shift in institutional perspective; the emphasis on federalism by German local governments could be a starting point. Also, the entire German society should take this issue into account and actively manage to respect the elderly self-management and those efforts, in turn, would promote social and cultural programs for the elderly. Therefore, the planning and limitations should be taken into account when trying to solve the elderly issues seriously. Recently, in German society, the specific method employed to solve this problem has concentrated itself on the biological and psychological features of the elderly. But the question should be expanded to what kind of social and cultural programs could be developed to improve the elderly people’s independent lives.
