Objectives：This study’s aims were to investigate the needs requiring care identified by patients following a first psychotic episode, and to compare them with the needs identified by psychiatrists.
Methods：The Camberwell Assessment of Need Short Appraisal Schedule was administered to 57 patients following their first psychotic episode and to 23 psychiatrists to determine their viewpoints about patients’ needs requiring care. The collected data were analyzed using Cohen’s kappa coefficient to compare the patients’ and the psychiatrists’ responses.
Results：The patients identified psychological distress, psychotic symptoms, employment, financial condition, personal relationships, and family relationships as needs requiring help to meet. However, the psychiatrists overestimated the basic needs of patients following their first psychotic episode.
Conclusion：We suggest that psychiatrists obtain accurate knowledge of the care needs of patients during a first psychotic episode to prevent the development of chronic psychosis.
