Sangmo(象毛) is a red hair hanging on the top of a helmet or military hat which is called jeollip(戰笠). In the literal meaning, sangmo is the hair of the elephant. But the actual material does not match the name. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to reveal the change of the name, material and concrete methods of production. Research data include historical documents, paintings and relics of the Joseon Dynasty.
Sangmo means the decoration of the top of the helmet with feather or fur. This tradition had been both in China and Korea, but they were called yi in China and Sangmo in Korea. It was used to decorate various places such as military-related things, such as weapons, flags and ceremonial equipment, harnessry, musical instruments and costumes. In the military costume, sangmo is a symbol of the military officer, it distinguishes from the civil official. In the former period of the Joseon dynasty, there was a lot of difficulty because they were totally dependent on Chinese imports. In the latter period of the Joseon dynasty, sangmo was gradually replaced with domestic material which reddish dyed the white horse"s mane or tail. There were differences in how to attach the sangmo to the helmet and the jeollip. Sangmo was divided into small amount and was placed evenly by 360 degrees for the helmets, or it was bundled together and hanged for the jeollip.
