This paper attempts to examine the purpose of women’s victory songs. What did they intend to deliver through songs accompanied with musical instruments and dancing? What was the purpose of their victory songs? In this paper, I will analyze Miriam’s song and Deborah’s song in order to find the answer to this question, and find out how to form and even lead the public opinion in a strict patriarchal society.
Miriam leads a group of women in the patriarchal social culture where the voices of individual women can not be heard, and conducts a musical performance of singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments in a public sphere. Through this performance, Miriam collects the voices of individual women, communicates their voices, and forms a public opinion. Through the song, Miriam and the other women publicize the key fact that ‘not Moses but Yahweh’ is a hero.
Deborah’s song contains diverse networks, leads the public to break down stereotyped concepts and to creates new relationships in the networks. Through the relationship between Deborah and Barak, her song suggests that in a patriarchal society men and women are not in the relationship of mastery or antagonism but of cooperation. Besides, the relationship between Deborah and Yael suggests that women can cooperate with each other, and particularly the poignant ridicule upon Sisera’s mother publicizes a new image of mother.
