The purpose of this study is to identify how the cultural competency of the Korean soldiers affects their adjustment to military service. The total of 300 soldiers participated in the study and the instruments to measure cultural competencies and positive adjustment were administered. The subscales of cultural competence were willingness to engage, cognitive flexibility and openness, emotion regulation, tolerance of uncertainty, self-efficacy, ethno-cultural empathy. The findings were as follows: First, the degrees of cultural competency of participants was reported to be lower than that of U. S. counterparts. Second, the variables such as age, rank and period of service were found to be significantly related with military adjustment. Third, among the subvariables of cultural competency, cognitive flexibility and openness was the only variable to have a significantly positive effect on the adjustment of participants. Fourth, among socio-demographic variables, experience of being abroad was the only variable to be significantly related with cultural competency. Willingness to engage was found to be highest among participants, and cognitive flexibility and openness, emotion regulation was in order. Participants reported the least level of ethno-cultural empathy.
