The purpose of this study is to develop a proper teaching guidance for cognitive differentiation strategies of postpositions ‘Eun/Neun’ and ‘I/Ga’ for elementary learners and to verify its effectiveness. Elementary learners for the Korean language have difficulties in distinguishing ‘Eun/Neun’ from ‘I/Ga’ and have substitution errors. To prevent the substitution errors, learners should internalize detailed differentiation strategies. First, this paper examines semantic and functional differences between ‘Eun/Neun’ and ‘I/Ga’ and concludes that the differences should be explained in the discourse level or text level, since ‘Eun/Neun’ and ‘I/Ga’ function differently as a topic maker and a subject maker respectively. Therefore, this study develops a ‘topic seeking activity’ using cohesive text. The topic seeking activity is to help learners select proper postpositions by seeking a concord relation between topics and explanations and between subjects and predicates. In order to see whether this activity enables learners to internalize differentiation strategies, an experiment was conducted using questions developed. Results showed that there were significant differences in the percentage of correct answers. This means the topic seeking activity was effective for learning the proposition.
