This study is interested in exploring the way that family elder care contributes effectively to the quality of life of Korean elderly. Korean society has subjected to many societal changes which in turn brought to changes in family value, family structure, family patterns, etc. While the number of older people who are dependent to others will increase as Korean population ages, the responsibility to care for older family members will be assigned to only one family member, especially to a woman. But women nowadays tend to participate in labor force rather than taking the caregiver role in the family. As a result, family no longer functions as an effective caregiving system for elderly. Previous studies on elder care in Korean society consitently report that family caregiver experience too many burdens, and older family members feel the guilty or the loss of self-esteem. Other caregiving system such as nursing homes or hospitals do not contribute positively to the life of Korean elderly. The review of the literature on family relations, elder care, and stress and coping suggests that emotional and instrumental supports from family members are essential to the welfare of older people. This study suggests the way to maintain the emtional and instrumental functions of the family as an elder care system First, it is important to make an effort to improve the emtional ties with family members, including spouse and children in the later stages of family life span. Second, family members can cant` the role of care manager, not of care provider, in family care system. Family members can examine various types of services from various sources and arrange the set of services for their older family members. This will lower the burden of family caregivers and maintain self esteem of older people. Third, family care system needs to be integrated into the community services. Family may concentrate on the emotional support to older members, while utilizing the instrumental services from the community. Fourth, it is necessary for older people to keep their social network including kins and friends in their later life. For all of these, we need to develop the diverse types of social and community services for the elderly, and to make these services accessible.
