Today, South Korea is in battle against various dementias with many residential facilities merely focusing upon custodial care. Yet, in the context of long-term care, it is critical for health care providers to consider adopting an innovative dementia-specific care model such as the Person-Centered Care (PCC). The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the readiness of direct-care workers to adapt the PCC model in the long-term care facilities in South Korea. The qualitative interviews were completed with seven direct-care workers at two long-term care facilities for older adults in Daejeon, South Korea. Key themes related to their ‘best’ dementia care were communication, empathy, acceptance, trustworthiness, autonomy, dementia-friendly environment, nonjudgment, and compliment. The findings indicated that the perception of the ‘best’ dementia care from direct-care workers was close to the concept of PCC model but overall cultural change was needed. Study limitations and further research are discussed.
